Melissa Thinks: Before it's devastatingly long hiatus, Glances Into
the Minds of the Unfortunate was one of my favorite ongoing stories. Now that it's back and better than ever, I'm excited to say I can now throw this recommendation at you without feeling guilty.

Kaylehn Davies is, as she puts it, a bitch. She really only has a few friends, all of which barely can seem to put up with her most of the time, and her reputation with men seems to precedes her. After she passes out from getting her ears pierced, Kaylehn discovers she can hear people's thoughts. Of course, it's not as grand as it seems; she can only hear the thoughts of seemingly nerdy men. Why? She doesn't know. But she'll use her new found gift to help out a potential love interest and maybe fall in love along the way.

I know some people who find this story off-putting simply for the fact that they hate the main character - for me this was not true. I think Kaylehn, although annoying and rude at times, is constantly learning as a character. Through her relationship with Ray and his friends, her preformed "nerd" generalizations are dissolving. While she still isn't exactly a basket of roses, she's a funny character who deep deep deep down has a good heart.

Although, I'm notorious amongst my friends for loathing love triangles, this might be the first instance in which I truly had no preference as to which guy the main character ended up with. Both Ray and Ren compliment Kaylehn's personality in different ways and each interaction with the two brothers constantly challenge Kaylehn to be different.

Melissa Thinks: The term “free love” was coined in the Victorian era by feminists who sought to keep personal affairs personal by separating the state and church from things such as marriage, sex, birth control, etc. In the 1960’s and 70’s, in the time the Vietnam War, Woodstock and the hippie movement, “free love” became more associated with promiscuity—things like one night stands, multiple sexual partners, and adultery. It is in this time period that our story takes place.

“Free Love” by Random Acts of Authorship is a stunning tale of confliction, desire, and heartbreak. This 2007 SKOW nominee continuously amazed me. I was completely engrossed in Amy’s situation and was rooting for her and Luke until the very end. Much like the namesake term’s meaning, “Free Love” is about the character’s desire to love who they want without the inevitable backlash from friends, family, and the public in general. That’s why this story is so great—even though it takes place in the 70’s, there are still many things applicable to our lives today.

Addiction

When he grabbed my hand, riding the wave of confidence of the drugs, it took all I had to remember to breathe. And when his lips touched mine for the very first time, I knew I was his.

Melissa Thinks: It's common for women to start dating people who they know are bad for them - whether it's because they think that they're fixable or because they just can't resist. The main character in "Addiction" is one of those women.

This was quite an interesting story to get through because not only are we seeing James slowly deteriorate from his addiction to drugs, but we also see Tess' struggle to stay sane while dealing with her obsession with James. It's hard not to love this story, what with it's simple premise and smooth prose - I was engrossed within reading the first few chapters.

Gabriella4549's writing is almost poetic in it's simplistic construction. She's written a tragically decomposed love story that inflicts with it's raw emotion. You may not leave this story with a fuzzy feeling in your stomach, but I encourage everyone to give it a try - because the styles and themes of this piece are truly memorable.

Second Chances

Marta Thinks: xoxluurve is like a puppet master when it comes to writing: she knows exactly how to pull at your heartstrings. "Second Chances" is a perfect example of her insanely brilliant talent.

Initially, you are led to believe that the story is an angsty reunion between Mark and Kennedy - the tale seems to be pretty straight forward. But is love ever really that simple? Of course not, and so xoxluurve brilliantly subverts your expectations and introduces the independent Alana, who is in love with Mark.

Mark's meant to be happy with Kennedy. Is he really? Alana is meant to be moving on successfully. Will she? Whatever the answer, there is no doubt that this is another amazing xoxluurve romance.

This is the story of Julius who is trying to move on from the death of his boyfriend; Levant; by getting a new job and asserting himself into the world again. However, there is one downside. Levant is still there as either a hallucination or a ghost - the what does not really bother Julius. He just knows his true love is still there with him and he refuses to let him go. But what happens when Levant demands that Julius lets him go by asking out Codie; the “mean” guy at work; out on a date?

I know that I have just described pretty much the most mind-warping plot in the world but imyouth-imjoy delivers it flawlessly. I must admit, when I realised where the story I was going I was a little anxious as to how it was going to go because I can imagine it is so easy to lose focus on a plot so delicate. This never happened. The writer had everything on their side. Fantastic characters that were really fleshed out thanks to splendid writing, short chapters that were bite size which proves you do not need to go overboard on narration, description or dialogue to put your story across and a plot that leaves the reader just wanting more. Seriously, I was hooked onto every single word and pretty much digested the entire piece in just over an hour.

Helen Thinks: It's been a long time since I sat and read a suggestion that was longer than ten sentences; seriously being the poetry judge made thinks quick and easy for me; so 'Dose of Your Own' by Our Heartfelt Lies was a real treat. Honestly, the idea of thirty three chapters was daunting at first but thanks to the heat making it impossible to fall asleep at half five in the morning I decided to read the first couple. What was the harm right? Well... I'll tell you what the harm in that was – I could not put it down. Seriously, I have bags under my eyes right now due to lack of sleep because I was hooked. Hooked I tell you. Fantastic.

'Dose of Your Own' follows Kelsey who is out for revenge after the jerk, Brian, broke her sister's heart last semester. The plan is foolproof, or so she thinks. What she did not take into consideration would be that her own nemesis, Andrew, would all of a sudden take an interest in helping nor did she expect their feelings towards each other become less hostile.

Not only did Our Heartfelt Lies have an entire bag of characters, both main and recurring, that had their own qualities but they managed to keep on top of them all without drowning. This, dear readers, I believe is a trait that needs applauding because I bet everyone knows how hard it is to keep on top of endless characters as well as letting them have their own right amount of development. You knew which characters to love, which ones to dislike and which ones you were meant to dislike but secretly your heart was melting for. Like all good love triangles, you definitely have a team to pick for and a love interest that you're rooting for from the get go.

The plot line could seem a little far-fetched. I mean, who would think a sister would go to so much trouble for their sibling? Well actually, I don't think it is. For those of you that know me know I'm a best friends with my younger sister and when her heart was broken a few months ago all I could think about was 'destroying' her partner. I may not have elaborated a scheme as detailed as Kelsey's but I find myself understanding her motives and through that I felt like I had a rapport with her. This is also a fact I'm sure many sisters out there that will read this story will feel.

My only flaw with the story is that at some points I was thinking... huh, how the hell did we get here? Now honestly, it could have been because I was reading it at half past five in the morning while the heat was more like Brazil rather than Britain so my brain cells were fried. Or maybe it was just little bits that needed tidying up when Our Heartfelt Lies finds the time to go back and edit the novel. This, however, should not stop you from reading this amazing story.

So all in all, 'Dose of Your Own' is a story about dysfunctional families, friendships and a breaking the status quo in High School that will have you hooked from the very first chapter and I hope that you all enjoy it as much as I did.

Melissa Thinks: This was definitely not a story I was expecting to enjoy. The summary, although clear now that I've actually read the story, seemed confusing and I wasn't quite sure what the story was actually about (except for that it was obviously some kind of complicated love... pentagon?). So let me clear that up for anyone else who's struggling: Lauren is in love with her best friend Jarred, who's dating Elena. In order to try and get Jarred's attention, Lauren asks (kinda more like forces) Zack to pretend to be her boyfriend; that is where the story really begins.

I just found this story captivating. The plot is classic FP material, but it's just too adorable not to love. It's short, only six chapters long, so it's good for those who want something quick, but aren't really up for a one shot. I like Mad for Fig's writing because it's simple and funny, but has a concise voice. I didn't find the dialogue to be stiff at all, and the interactions between the main couple gave me warm fuzzies every time. I ended up closing my laptop with a giant smile on my face because I'm pretty positive I fell in love with Damage Control.

Ali Thinks: Natalie likes Jeremy. Naturally, she's never spoken to him in the ages (and ages) she's had this infatuation, but now that it's a new year, she's made talking to him a resolution. Which sucks

I'm guessing everyone here knows what they say about best laid plans. And I'm guessing everyone here also knows what they say about one door closing.

Honesty hour: I really hate love triangles. I can't really express the amount, but it's only slightly less than when there aren't enough marshmallows in the Lucky Charms box. That being said, I really did like Lies of the Heart. It was funny, albeit slightly ridiculous, but I think that's what I liked about it most. It's one of those longshot romances that would probably not happen in real life, but is still fun to read.

I would highly recommend this story for someone in one of those god-awful reading ruts. A lot of times, it can be hard to get through a story while in a rut, but I really think Lies of the Heart has the unique power to end the rut and start the reading frenzy. It's not that long, and it seems even shorter since it doesn't drag on. And hey, if you're not in a rut, keep the streak going with another great, lighthearted story.
pretty bad for her because Jeremy's got the hots for Natalie's best friend, Sam. But that's okay, because Natalie and her friend Matt have hatched a brilliant plan involving fake dating, a lot of lying, and a bit of scheming to manipulate Jeremy into turning his attentions from Sam to Natalie.

Marta Thinks: A love triangle done well is a love triangle you don't want to miss out on. You'll find yourself unsure of who you want Vita to be with - the devoted Rabka or the manly Gray. And once you finally decide, Scheherzade pulls out a new twist or a new POV, and find yourself unsure all over again. Does this mean it’s good? Yes. Add in castles, Crown Princes, thieves and a whole new world now. Does this mean it’s good? No. It means that now you've got yourself a winner.

I don’t know why this story isn’t more well-known. It should be. It has to be. And now that you know about its exsitance, you'd be crazy not to read it. Not read Chicanery would mean denying yourself an amazing story. And you don't want to be doing that, do you?

Helen Thinks: As the story summary states, no one wants
something more than when they cannot have it so our hero; Alec; has come up with a flawless plan to help him get all the boys – he pretends to be straight. With six carefully thought out steps, Alec gets his boy every time. As readers, we see these six steps in the first chapter as Alec uses it against a stranger on a park bench. One of the great things about Alec’s ploy is that there are no strings attached and he can have all the guys he wants. At the start of the story, Alec has three guys that he is ‘goofing’ about with. One he met two weeks ago, one he has been flirting with for nearly six months and then there is the third guy who he has been toying with for three years; Terry. So when Terry agrees to go on a double date with Alec’s new girlfriend and it turns out to be the boy from the park, Alec realises that maybe his luck has just run out...

The first thing that appealed to me about this story was the writing. I think this was thanks to d’Neronique making the decision to write in first person so we are following the story in Alec’s mindset. First person stories and I do not normally mix well because I think you lose something by not being able to flesh out the other characters. This, however, was not the case in ‘Out of Luck’. The identities of the other characters still came through and the readers could relate to them.

I know that some people are wary of Love Triangles but I believe that d’Neronique has given the time old cliché a good shake up with ‘Out of Luck’. Seriously though, how can there be a regular love triangle when one of the other characters believes his friend is a straight man?

Be warned, the story is ‘M’ rated – even in the first chapter – but not to a point where you think d’Neronique is writing smut for the sake of writing smut. However, when is that a bad thing? It’s not awkwardly written and I think adds to what makes this story unique in the first place.

With its fresh dialogue, realistic characters and a plot that unfolds beautifully, ‘Out of Luck’ is a story that leaves you desperately clicking the next button for more.

Vertigo

Life was complicated enough. Her job required a clearance, several passports, and lying to her boyfriend. When she gets mixed up with the CIA's fifth most-wanted, she has to go undercover with her partner as his fiancée. It doesn't help that he's overprotective, that they have to sleep in the same bed, or that he manages to get into that little compartment behind her heart.

Melissa Thinks: Action stories can be some of the best, and most popular, stories out there. When done right, they can have you sitting on the edge of your seat, shivering with anticipation and excitement. Unfortunately, it is extremely hard to come across stories such as these. Fortunately, the lovely Carmel March has provided us with one.

Carmel March created an interesting character - one not usually seen in action stories. She’s not the hard edged, gun-wielding cliche that we’ve come to recognize right on the spot. She’s a soft, easily breakable girl with a hint of naivety in her. A rookie logistics officer for the CIA, Gemma gets herself into more trouble than she bargained for when she’s pulled into Operation 67 and subsequently has to pose as her incredibly charming, and attractive, partner’s fiance.

The story is filled with well-researched details that form an intriguingly compelling plot. There's an even mix of actiony sequences and romantic scenes, keeping the plot balanced. I like how Gemma doesn't immediately have an intense attraction to Boone. It builds over time. I'm seriously looking forward to finding out how Carmel March continues this story. Will they complete their mission? Will they make it out alive? And then there’s the difficult decision that Gemma has to face: her real fiance, Ben, or her fake fiance, Boone?

Helen Thinks: ‘Ventures and Investments’ by RoughDraftHero is one of those stories that falls into many categories that we offer here at A Drop of Romeo and I cannot even begin to express how happy I am that it fell into my inbox.

Justin Plank’s father used to have THE acting agency in Los Angeles but when Plank Snr. died after a skiing accident, the agency was left to Justin where it slowly crumbled to the ground. Desperate to escape the failure that he knows is coming, Justin turns to Tony Torroda for help but there’s one problem: Justin betrayed Tony in the past. Despite this, Justin knows this is only opportunity to make it.

The characters are realistic, especially since RoughDraftHero has voiced in an Authors Note that she needs to make them a little bit older. Their interactions will literally remind you of Katy Perry’s song ‘Hot ‘N’ Cold’ because one minute they’re all lovey dovey and the next they’re wanting to kill each other. Usually this would be an element to a story that would have me wanting to shut off but RoughDraftHero has you falling in love with them, warts an’ all!

I’m going to perfectly honest with you, this story teeters on the thin line of domestic abuse without the domesticity but RoughDraftHero writes it flawlessly. You feel the anger, the hatred and the uncomfortable sensation of reading something you know you should not be enjoying but you just cannot shut it down! The writing literally sucks you in and leaves you obsessively clicking the next button!

On fictionpress, I’m not usually the type to say I have favourites because it can change so often but I genuinely believe that not only has this story become a favourite but so has RoughDraftHero! They are an author that everyone should check out because they never fail to deliver.

Out of Luck

Helen Thinks: Her fifth hospital visit in only two months and Kate realises that maybe she has become a pretty unlucky person, especially seeing as before then the only time she had ever been in hospital was her birth. However, could she really be that unlucky when she meets that gorgeous Doctor? Well, yes because she happens to have met this gorgeous doctor at a time where’s she unsure of where her relationship with long term boyfriend, Charlie, is heading. The chance meeting of the handsome doctor outside of the hospital and forming a friendship; most definitely just a friendship; is enough to create doubts.

I truthfully believe that writing love triangles is one of the hardest things a writer can do but nkltt210 make it look like a walk in the park in ‘Out of Luck’. Each character has their own individual quirks and characteristics that enable the reader to start picking sides, especially where the two male characters are concerned. Nkltt210 has managed to create a plot that flows fluently and most definitely has a perfect pace to it that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat, yelling at the computer screen and feeling completely flustered as things either do or do not go your own way.

If this did not sell the story enough, there is an added bonus of nkltt210 manages to infiltrate light moments of humour throughout the story that will have the reader laughing along. It’s these fragments of humour that helps the characters become three dimensional and the interactions between the scenes completely realistic.

In all, ‘Out of Luck’ is a humorous, well thought out story that has you clicking the next button eager for more and feeling that warm bubbly feeling of happiness at the end.

Hello Kitty

Amy Thinks:  There are times in people's lives where they just have one too many drinks and do something they'll come to regret the next morning. I, personally, tend to make some drunken phonecalls (some I may not even remember). However, I haven't reached the point Hello Kitty's protagonists did.

Jude Keenan and Lira O'Brien have been enemies since elementary school and continued through to their college years. So imagine their shock after finding the other in the same bed of a low rate motel after a drunken night of smokin' hot sex. The shock only intensifies when they realize they are married and have matching Hello Kitty tattoos with each others name. They both come to an agreement that the marriage needs to end as soon as possible. But, with Jude being cutoff ('suspended' as he puts it) from his parent's money, a quickie divorce is a no go. Unless, the two put on a lovestruck face, stay married, and convince his grandmother that the marriage is real to receive a hefty trust fund due to a loophole. If Lira agreed, he'd give her a hundred thousand dollars and a house she can call her own. When the lines of their relationship become blurred, are they still fooling everyone else, or themselves?

There were times where chapters were mainly dialogue, and I wished there could have been more narrative throughout the entire story. When reading on my phone, it is really hard to see the line breaks, thus when she had point of view changes, it seemed out of nowhere. It was easier to recognize via the actual site than the mobile version. Despite these, I found the heated arguments and insults Lira threw at Jude humorous. It's almost as if she swallowed a thesaurus and spat out the words back at him.

All in all, Hello Kitty was a refreshing read, making it seem that the drunken mistake was probably the best thing to happen to them.

Percipient

CJ's life has turned upside down; her mom spontaneously remarried, she was forced to move from the house she's lived in her entire life, and now she's got the most annoying stepbrother ever. Oh, and the guy she likes? He's a kind, smart, sexy, and infuriatingly oblivious ghost. She doesn't know how she's going to do it, but she's got to bring Jared back to life, no matter the cost.

Melissa Thinks: CJ has known Jared ever since she can remember. He's her best friend, her confidant, and her long time crush. She longs to be with him and to show him off to the world as hers; the only problem is she's the only one who can see him. Robyn Dessey wrote this story based on the idea that if a person dies and a child is born at the same time, they will become connected to each other and that's exactly what's happened to CJ and Jared. Complications arise, however, when she learns of her new stepbrother's old crush on her and the questions of whether or not she can have a relationship with a ghost start to become more and more urgent.

I have never wanted a ghost for a boyfriend before in my entire life, but Percipient has made me totally crave my own sexy Jared. Percipient is a very underrated story. It needs so much more reviews than it has simply because I'm so in love with it. The voice is absolutely fantastic; the dialogue is actually realistic as if the characters themselves are speaking to you. I've never encountered a story that used the ghost concept this well and went with it in the direction that this author has. Truly an imaginative story with great flow and rich content.

He Punks Me Not

Amy Thinks: Tired of the pretty boy, jock, Greek God male interests in the stories you're reading? Want something that focuses around guys that are different and maybe (for some) isn't the type of guy you may normally look at with interest? Then look no further than He Punks Me Not.

Charisse 'Riz' Dently is a normal teenage girl. Normal meaning she's the type of girl you see everyday: blonde, a bit preppy, parents that may be a tad overprotective, and crushing on a guy from a far. Not uncommon with most teenage girls. The only thing different her crush, Oz, is in the punk/goth crowd. While the jock friends of her popular cousin have their eye on her and hope to catch hers, Riz is only mesmerized by the pierced, tattooed, smoking Oz. She even goes to the extent of getting her tongue pierced, behind her parents' backs, hoping to impress him. However, when Oz and his friends acknowledge her existence (cordially or otherwise), his viciously blunt green-haired best friend, Stine, does everything in his power to scare her away. But soon she sees another side to Stine. A side that makes her feel alive, even if she still has her sights set on Oz.

There is some iffy grammar/sentences, and spelling errors throughout the story. Sometimes, I felt like the characters where a bit immature, naïve, or downright bratty. However, it was slidewhow's first story on Fictionpress, and towards the end of the story, a majority of the characters had evolved. Depsite a few incidents, I felt there was more Riz obsessing over Oz than a developing relationship between her and Stine: and even when they were sort of a couple. Which made my heart just ache and adore Stine all the more.

Bittersweet ending and all, He Punks Me Not shows that you should never judge a book by it's cover, because you'll never know what's underneath.

He looked towards my waist before groaning and looking away. “Look what you’re wearing.” Confused, I glanced down, and immediately realised the dilemma. I was in my underwear. “Oh.”

Rosie Thinks: I'm always pretty vocal about my dislike of love triangles, but I will admit that a love triangle can be amazing when done right - and I consider this a love triangle done right. Emery is Bronwyn's sister's (Amber's) new boyfriend. He appears at first to be a bit of a bad boy but as the story progresses, you get insight into his character and see how sweet and loveable he really is. Bronwyn loves her sister and has always been close to her, despite being a tad jealous, and so doesn't understand why lately Amber has been so distant. Finding this out creates some suspense and is one of the very many reasons why I kept clicking the 'next' button.

The interactions and tension between Emery, Amber and Bronwyn is palpable. In.the.Wardrobe has captured the family dynamics between the two sisters perfectly and realistically. Even though at the beginning you're lead to not like Amber very much, the author still doesn't paint her as an all-round bad character. Rather, Amber stays realistic and well-balanced, though I can't say I liked her much, especially at the start

This story is another case of extremely well written dialogue that just flows, expressing each character perfectly. Bronwyn was a little bit quirky but entirely loveable. She made for a great MC and I enjoyed being inside her head for the story. Nothing in this story is overly-cliche and it was a great read, especially since In.the.Wardrobe has such an amazing way with words. And she's a fellow Australian, which just made the story that much better for me!

Amy Thinks: In the beginning of the story, Becca is definitely not Drunk on Love, but rather the Amaretto Sours she's downed while watching her ex-boyfriend marry another woman. It would be hard enough for any young woman attending an ex's wedding. But when the ex was the one they thought was The One, it's only that much harder. Thank goodness Becca has a handsome groomsman Nick to distract her and make her head fuzzy with thoughts that don't surround happily married Casey. But, if he's so happily married, what right does he have to be jealous of Nick and Becca?

It's an easy read. Not too much dialogue or narrative. A decent balance with only a few missing words or misspellings that can easily be overlooked. The only thing I can say that aggravated me was that the story is on wattpad. That may not bother other readers as much as it does me, but the layout is just a bit too complicated when reading. Chapters are broken up into pages, which I found to be a bit of a pain. Or it could stem from my laziness when reading online.


However, despite my obvious dislike and how I've made it known I'm not a big wattpad supporter, I urge others to give it a read. Nick is a true gentlemen and with Casey caring more than he should about Becca, it's definitely a love triangle I want to read more about. With humor infused in the not yet heavy drama, it's a refreshing and feel good read. And maybe.... you'll end up like me and just may follow the story through to it's end. Wattpad or not.
